As a university, research and state library, we fulfil a wide range of tasks and functions.

Functions and Tasks

University library of TU Darmstadt with the locations ULB Stadtmitte, ULB Lichtwiese and ULB Schloss

The library provides members of the TU and the population of south Hesse with printed and digital literature and information for research, teaching and studying purposes. It promotes information literacy, provides publishing services and offers learning space for over 1,000 people.

Research library for issues concerning information transfer and infrastructural aspects of data science and digital humanities in cooperation with university research, based on the library's digital collections and rich historical holdings. In this context, retro-digitisation , the digital edition and research data are all of key significance. As a conservation centre, ULB researches and arranges general aspects of restoration and conservation and provides advisory functions, in particular for Hesse institutions.

State library for the population of Darmstadt and south Hesse as well as for training and research institutions, authorities, cultural institutes and companies located here. The library operates a diverse cultural programme. It organises exhibitions, lectures, readings and other events, and develops new participatory forms of digital cultural mediation.

Depository library for south Hesse and the Giessen region since 1805.

Patent and Trademark Centre

As the central place for research, information management and knowledge transfer in the field of IP (Intellectual Property), the Patent and Trademark Centre is an important contact for the TU and for small and medium-sized companies, major companies, universities and research institutions in the Rhine-Main region.

Information and documentation on Europe and the EU.

The European Documentation Centre (EDC) is the point of contact for science, industry and the region. It provides advice, information and research opportunities on every aspect of the EU.

Historical archive

In accordance with Articles 2 and 20 of the Hesse Archives Act (HArchG), the Historical Archive is responsible for the collection, transfer, appropriate storage, backup and provision of archival documents from every area of the Technical University of Darmstadt and its predecessor institutions. It can also accept documents from other origins if this is necessary for the extension, indexing and use of the official archive material and for researching the history of the university.
