DFG Viewer 3D - Infrastructure for Digital 3D Reconstructions

The development of a digital 3D viewer infrastructure for 3D cultural heritage models is intended as a permanent infrastructure offering to enable sustainable accessibility and archiving of raw data sets and meta-information on the one hand, and to support collaboration and multidisciplinary specialist discourse on the virtual model by generating 3D web models from common data types on the other.

Brief Description

This includes the storage of proprietary 3D data sets, taking into account long-term availability – 3D web data viewer – documentation of 3D data using metadata and paradata in a standardised exchange format. The infrastructure has a modular structure and enables the connection of existing 3D repositories, taking into account the entire publication process from the storage and long-term preservation of 3D research data, to the automated provision of web derivatives in an exchange format following the existing DFG standards, to the decentralised display of these web models in the DFG viewer and in suitable research environments. While a prototype infrastructure was set up and validated in the first stage, the second stage serves to add further library repositories and to develop a distributed infrastructure.

The ULB Darmstadt participates as a partner of the community of practice, connecting the DFG 3D Viewer to the NFDI4ING Data Ingest Service.
