Alexander von Humboldt – Of Plants and Books
Exhibition at ULB Stadtmitte from 09 July to 22 September
2019/07/01
On 14 September will be the 250th anniversary of the famous scientist and traveler Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). While the TU Botanical Garden shows an exhibition about “Scientists, Collectors and Plant Hunters”, it suggests itself to present the original works by Alexander von Humboldt from the ULB’s collection.
As a geographer and natural scientist von Humboldt was also the author and editor of numerous books, some of them precious, hand-coloured folio volumes whose production cost him his inherited capital in the end.
The aim of the exhibition is to raise public awareness again to the rich collection of the library and to investigate the, at the time, spectacular insights of von Humboldt’s discoveries: Many of von Humboldt’s books convey impressions which changed our image of the world.
