Youth Cultures and the New Right
Exhibiton from 18 March to 30 April 2025 | ULB Schloss
2025/03/26
Students from the ‘Fashion and Aesthetics’ working group at the Department of Human Sciences present the results of a seminar on current social challenges in the foyer of the ULB Schloss.
Authority and nationalism as well as sexist, anti-semitic and racist misanthropy seem to have become socially acceptable among young people in recent years. Since the 2024 European elections in particular, the media has been talk in the media of a shift to the right among young people in Germany. Right-wing influencers have a very young audience, especially on TikTok, with whom the populists' seemingly “simple solutions” are catching on.
The exhibition addresses the question of how the New Right stages itself in social media and how a youth cultural identity is produced via fashion and pop culture. To this end, current phenomena such as right-wing fashion, tradwifes, memes, the interlocking of misogyny and xenophobia, etc., are examined, but aesthetic and pedagogical counter-strategies of ‘cultural hacking’ and ‘creative disruption’ are also reflected upon.
