1968 and the consequences | Student protests in Darmstadt in the 1960s and 1970s
PROLONGATION – Exhibiton from 15 December 2024 to 07 March 2025 in ULB Schloss
2024/12/13
During the student revolts in the 1960s, students across Europe took to the streets and demanded reforms. The ‘68ers’ were also active in Darmstadt.
In Darmstadt, people discussed, politicised and protested – sit-ins, go-ins and teach-ins were just as much a part of the protest repertoire as demonstrations, strikes and squats. People protested against canteen price increases, against a lack of and excessively expensive flats. They demanded a greater say for students and the so-called Mittelbau in the development and fate of the university – which until then had been determined by the professors – under the motto: ‘Unter den Talaren – Muff von tausend Jahren!’
The events in Darmstadt are examined against the background of general developments in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time and local and institutional peculiarities are highlighted – one-third parity of the committees, student university groups, war and armaments research, the canteen strikes and the squatter scene.
