More than just the Passover Haggadah Jewish cultural heritage at the ULB

Lecture on 2024-11-12 at 6pm in ULB Stadtmitte

2024/11/08

From 5pm individual pieces from the historical collections will be shown in the lecture hall in original or facsimile.

With the Passover Haggadah by Israel ben R. Meir from Heidelberg, the University and State Library Darmstadt has owned a masterpiece of late medieval book illumination for more than two hundred years. However, the Jewish cultural heritage in its holdings goes far beyond this: important medieval and early modern manuscripts, old Bible prints and liturgical texts as well as legal norms, association journals and textbooks are important witnesses to German-Jewish history. The lecture presents selected books and manuscripts in the context of the collection's history and is dedicated not least to the work of Rabbis Abraham Alexander Wolf and Bruno Italiener. 86 years after the crimes of the Pogrom Night, the ULB's Judaica collection, which was jointly collected by Jews and Christians, will come into focus and remind us of the past and present of Jewish life in Darmstadt and southern Hesse.
