The NFDI4Ing Metadata Profile Service

2023/12/05

Workshop on 12 December: Build your own metadata profiles

Modern guidelines for good scientific practice (example) usually include references to the FAIR-principles, whose ultimate goal is to optimize the reuse of data. To achieve this, metadata and data should be well-described so that they can be replicated and/or combined in different settings. Both data and associated metadata should be findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

Metadata in general is often described as data about data or all data necessary to understand a record. Typical examples are terms like author, a timestamp or a title. Terminologies for so-called generic metadata are usually available and also standardized. For example Dublin Core is one of the most well-known terminologies. However, the same does not usually apply to subject-specific metadata such as firmware version, measuring range, accuracy, or even basic description of physical quantities and units. Those are often described inadequately and utilized terminology is almost never standardized. The consequence is complicated research data management that requires highly individualized metadata schemas. Individualization and complexity make subsequent use difficult.

The Metadata Profile Service (MPS) allows users to define customized metadata schemas using terms from existing ontologies as building blocks fitting individual research data and to share the schemas with other scientists. Thanks to a modular and hierarchical modelling approach, the schemas are flexible and can be reused despite their flexibility.

In this workshop you will learn about the core aspects and understanding of the metadata profile concept, as well as the basic modelling concepts. The workshop provides practical training on using the metadata profile service for finding or building metadata profiles. Overall the workshop aims at an introductory training level.
