Publication commemorating the 450th library anniversary

2017/10/30

On 16 November 2017 the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt announces a publication commemorating its 450 years jubilee, including contributions on the history of the library, the city of Darmstadt and the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt.

450 Years of Knowing – Collecting – Imparting: The history of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt is a mirror of Darmstadt's cultural and political development from a picturesque residency to a modern city of science. Over the centuries scientific interest, literary enthusiasm, and the joy of collecting historical treasures has shaped a unique collection which today constitutes a valuable part to the cultural heritage of Hesse. At first a private collection of books, the library developed to a veritable court and later state library with a substantial collection of manuscripts, early prints, sheet music, old maps and more which is now open to the public since 1817. The University and State Library today is the central library of the University of Technology, Darmstadt, and serves as a general research library for the university and the surrounding region.

The richly illustrated anniversary publication sheds light on the history of the library, its collections and all people having played vital roles for the library in the course of time – always bearing in mind the local history of Darmstadt and Hesse in general.
