Horizontal skyscrapers, a glass dome over Manhattan, a walking city: these unbuilt projects explored ambitious new ideas, questioned conventions and pointed the way to the future. They reflect the society, politics and aesthetics of the time.

There are various reasons why some of the most fascinating and creative architectural designs were never realised:

They were far ahead of their time, they failed due static or financial problems, the legal or political situation was unfavourable, the design lost in the competition.
