First Humboldt Fellow at ULB

2019/02/28

The library is looking forward to welcome Jonathan West from Newcastle as its first Humboldt Fellow. Jonathan West is an expert in German historical linguistics and will work at the ULB at his machine readable text corpus (more than 27 M different word forms) for three months, starting on 1 March.

His objective is, together with Dr. Thomas Stäcker, Director of the ULB, to develop a concept for permanent archiving and to find supplying opportunities for the corpus which focuses on the early high German speech period and the pivotal changes between 1350 and 1750. The development of a flat, theory neutral tag set shall help to overcome the problems in annotating nonstandard historic sources and the problems of different editorial principles. The texts of this time period provide a wealth of linguistic and cultural data which are of high interest for researchers of many different disciplines.
