2017/03/08

On the occasion of the 660 th anniversary of the Golden Bull, the most important constitutional document of the Holy Roman Empire, and the 700th birthday of Emperor Charles IV, the ULB dedicates an exhibition to the copy assigned to the Archbishop of Cologne held by the library.

Registered in the UNESCO „Memory of the World Programme“ the manuscript of the Golden Bull belongs to the treasures of the library. The exhibition also presents further rarely seen mediaeval manuscripts, incunabula, early prints, documents, seals and coins associated with the Golden Bull. The emphasis of the Exhibition lies on rights and rituals before and after signing the Golden Bull and on the provenience of the Cologne copy and its preservation in Darmstadt.

The exhibition „The Golden Bull of Emperor Charles IV (1356–2016): the Cologne Copy in Darmstadt“ was designed in collaboration with the subject group of Mediaeval History at the Department of History at the TU Darmstadt. It can be seen from 12 December 2016 to 19 March 2017 in the exhibition area of the ULB Stadtmitte (S1|20), daily from 8 a.m. to 8.p.m.

The grand opening will take place at 19 December at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Room of ULB Stadtmitte (registration requested by 11 December, mail or phone 06151 – 16-76200).
