The Libraries4Future initiative was founded in 2019 by representatives of the Netzwerks Grüne Bibliothek and the LIBREAS Association. It has formulated five principles that enable individuals and/or educational institutions to take a stand on issues relating to environmental and climate protection:

• 1. Libraries are key players in climate protection
• 2. Everyone can and must take action
• 3. Libraries act as multipliers
• 4. Libraries strengthen social cohesion
• 5. Politicians must take action

In the summer of 2026, the ULB adopted this declaration of principles (Grundsatzerklärung).
